7.7. Earthquake brings hardship to 1000s in Flores and Palue Islands
On 15 August 2026, a 7.7 earthquake occurred off the north coast of Flores, causing severe damage to homes, schools, airports, government buildings, hospitals, and harbors. Over 15,000 aftershocks have occurred, including a powerful one affecting neighboring Palue Island. Thousands of people have moved into temporary shelters. Some have returned home but still live outside in tents for fear the buildings will collapse. The earthquake led to 68 deaths, but more deaths have occurred in the camps due to the harsh conditions. Hundreds were injured.
The survivors in Palue and Flores Islands are experiencing food and water shortages. The dry season has not ended and will probably be prolonged becuase of El Niño. Natural water sources are dry, and many must buy water. They need water to cook.
Many businesses were damaged or destroyed, leaving households with little or no income. A weaver remarked that she is having difficulty finding customers for the textiles she makes. As a result, she is also experiencing a shortage of funds.
YORIS provided basic necessities to some households last month through generous donor support and plans to do more.
